With COVID-19 shutting down local businesses across the country, its harder and harder to find group activities for kids and their families to partake in.  However, it opens up an opportunity for families to find new activities to undertake with just the family unity.

We’ve decided to reach back into our bag of tricks and list some items that brooklyn families could have fun with.  We found inspiration of these from various businesses throughout Brooklyn as well as some online posts.

Airplane Clothespins

There is nothing that’s as easy and fun to do with your kid like making an airplane clothespin. All you need is a clothespin, glue and some craft foam and you are ready to start on your airplane clothespin. They are not only easy to make, but you will also love the end result as they are super cute.

Jewelry Making

Making jewelry can be a fun activity to do with your kid. For one, the supplies are easy to get depending on what jewelry you are making. If you want a simple jewelry, consider buying a thread and beads as supplies and have your kids insert them to make a bracelet or neck piece. You can get them in different colors and mix them up.

Paper Crafts and Scrapbooking

There are various ways to have fun with paper crafts and scrapbooking, in ways that both kids and adults can enjoy.  The most common scenario might include collages, with the simple combination of cardstock and glue can lead to endless imagination.

More advanced scenarios can include stenciling and cutting to create really advanced designs.  For those that want to take things to the next level, consider something like the cricut machine, which allows you to specify really intricate and amazing designs that will get cut by the machine.  Certain machines even let you carve wood!

Pottery

Pottery is a sure fun art activity especially if your kid is a fan of it. You can buy them a pottery wheel and some clay, molds, and paint and let them get creative. You can make different projects depending on what interests your kids. Allowing them to take the lead in these projects helps them in gaining self-confidence and feeling that they can be heard.

Race Toilet Paper Rolls

If you have a collection of toilet paper rolls, you can use them for a fun activity with your kids. You can use them to create race toilet paper rolls. Encourage your kids to cut wheels from the rolls and attach them using brads. You can opt to have them paint the rolls before they start creating the racing cars or paint them after. After the racers are done and dry, create room for a racing field and have them race their cars.

Create a Rainbow

You can help your kids create a rainbow by using a pack of crayons. You will need a box of crayons, glue, canvas, and a hairdryer. Help your kids stick the crayons using the glue to the canvas and leave them for a few minutes to dry.

Once that is done, hold your canvas up with the glued crayons, take the hair dryer and start melting the crayons. Ensure that as a parent you supervise this activity to avoid any dangers.

Sewing Classes

Sewing classes are a great arts and crafts activity that both kids and their parents can do. While local sewing classes are likely shuttered until the pandmic ends, you can find online sewing classes rather easily.  The demand for these types of online classes has increased since the pandemic and many companies are stepping up to the plate.
