If you never imagined that your reception (and even your ceremony) could be all-at-once funky, hip, elegant, posh and romantic, you’ll reconsider after you have your wedding in Brooklyn.

The Best Spots for a Brooklyn Wedding

As the most populous borough in New York City, and arguably one of the most historic, it’s easy to find a Brooklyn wedding destination that will match even the most demanding and specific criteria. Whether you’re looking for a quiet, romantic corner of the city to host a small, intimate ceremony or a modern, trendy hall that serves hundreds of guests, Brooklyn delivers. Here’s just a small sampling of some of the most popular Brooklyn wedding spots:

Stage 6 at Steiner Studios, 15 Washington Avenue – Located in Brooklyn’s historic Navy Yard, Stage 6 at Steiner Studios features a classic-meets-modern ballroom with gorgeous panoramic windows, offering a stunning view of the Manhattan skyline. The rooftop pavilion, completely enclosed in glass, will make the perfect spot for the ceremony before you and your guests venture downstairs for a reception to remember.

Prospect Park Boathouse, 95 Prospect Park West – For over 100 years, some of the most elegant weddings in Brooklyn have been held at the Prospect Park Boathouse, a beautiful formal wedding hall overlooking the historic Lullwater Bridge. The Boathouse features exclusive catering by Moveable Feast Catering, optional electric boat rentals, and capacity to serve up to 225 guests.

The Knitting Factory, 361 Metropolitan Avenue – For couples truly looking to stand out from the crowd, there’s the Knitting Factory – a famously hip music venue featuring everything from punk and hip hop to metal and indie, right in the heart of Brooklyn’s trendy Williamsburg neighborhood. If you can manage to find a night when the place isn’t hosting one of the hottest underground bands touring the country, the Knitting Factory will be happy to host your Brooklyn wedding – complete with catering, photography, music and more.

Oceana Hall, 1029 Brighton Beach Avenue – Just steps away from the Atlantic Ocean lies Oceana Hall, a Brooklyn wedding venue that’s situated firmly at the opposite end of the elegance spectrum from the Knitting Factory. Oceana Hall can cater to parties big and small, with expandable interiors to accomodate anything from an intimate family-only wedding dinner to an extravagant celebration for up to 600 guests. Hand-painted ceilings, crystal chandeliers and gilded columns adorn this classic Brooklyn wedding hall, whose proprietors will be thrilled to assist with everything from food and drinks to entertainment and floral arrangements.

Virtually any venue can be transformed into a dream wedding destination with the help of an experienced, tasteful florist. Fortunately, this borough offers an excellent selection of florists with years of experience, ready to beautify your wedding in Brooklyn:

Brooklyn’s Dumbo Neighborhood

For art lovers, Brooklyn’s Dumbo neighborhood should be a main attraction. Dumbo stands for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass, and it has become a hub for emerging arts since its deindustrialization in the mid-20th century. Both not-for-profit institutions and for-profit art galleries thrive in this area, as well as theaters that present many different types of productions. Some of the more popular venues in the Dumbo district include:

St. Ann’s Warehouse, 38 Water Street – Founded in 1980, St. Ann’s originally presented many classical concerts at their original location in Brooklyn Heights. Since relocating to the Dumbo neighborhood in 2001, St. Ann’s has hosted several productions that combine theater and rock and roll in extremely well-received ways. The theater has received the Ross Wetzsteon Memorial Award from the Village Voice for it’s dedication to new developing new work. Artists that have been associated with St. Ann’s include Charlie Kaufman, Steve Buscemi, Lou Reed, Laurie Anderson, The Coen brothers, Antony of Antony and the Johnsons, Meryl Streep and many more.

A.I.R. Gallery, 111 Front Street, Suite 228 – The A.I.R. gallery was created in 1972 as a reaction to the largely male-dominated art scene in New York City at the time. The A.I.R. Gallery is an all-women non-profit that is dedicated to exhibiting women’s art and celebrating women’s contributions to the Brooklyn arts and theater scene.

Other galleries in this neighborhood include:

Brooklyn Museum

The Brooklyn Museum, located at 200 Eastern Parkway, is perhaps the most famous institution for classic art in Brooklyn. The museum, founded in 1846, houses sculptures, paintings, drawings, watercolors, pastels, and prints ranging from circa 1720 to 1945.

Pieces created after 1945 are located in the Contemporary Art section. Famous artists that have pieces in the Brooklyn Museum include Winslow Homer, John Singer Sargent, William Rush, Frederic Church, Thomas Cole, Albert Bierstadt, George Inness, William Merritt Chase, Hiram Powers, Eastman Johnson, Albert P. Ryder, and Thomas Eakins.

They have also held many different exhibitions featuring African, Islamic, Asian, Egyptian, and Pacific art.

Outdoor Sculptures

Many major cities have permanent outdoor sculptures to visit, and the Brooklyn art scene is no different. Outdoor statues and sculptures include:

Theater in Brooklyn

There is no shortage of venues for arts and theater in Brooklyn. Classic shows, children’s theater, new plays, opera, ballet, and avant-garde theatre are consistently being performed. Some of the spaces include:

Walt Whitman Theater at Brooklyn Center, Campus Rd and Hillel Pl – The Walt Whitman theater is the centerpiece of the Brooklyn Performing Arts center. This 2,350-seat theater has presented concerts by The Joffrey Ballet, Itzhak Perlman, Luciano Pavarotti, Tony Bennett, Linda Ronstadt, Arlo Guthrie, and The Beach Boys, just to name a few. But music concerts are only part of what this theater offers. The Walt Whitman venue plays an important part in the Brooklyn arts and theater scene through the presentation of Brooklyn College mainstage productions and thesis productions. Youth theater productions are also seen on this stage. The Walt Whitman Theater also presents shows that are staged through non-profit organizations and community theater companies.

BAM, 30 Lafayette Avenue – BAM is one of the oldest performing arts centers in the country. It was founded in 1861 and has since become one of the most lively venues in New York City. BAM stages up to 220 productions every year, which are all monetarily supported by contributions. There is an in-house restaurant and bar, and they host over 200 New York City schools each year. Throughout the years, BAM has presented emerging plays as well as several nationally-renowned Shakespeare productions.

The Brick Theater, 575 Metropolitan Avenue – The Brick is one of the many venues in the Brooklyn arts and theater scene that is dedicated to new plays. Their interests in cutting-edge theater has led them to stage many highly acclaimed world premiers, such as Bouffon Glass Menajoree, In a Strange Room, Samuel & Alasdair: A Personal History of the Robot War, Suspicious Package, Craven Monkey and the Mountain of Fury, and Greed: a Musical Love $tory.

The Billie Holiday Theater, 1368 Fulton St – This theater was founded in 1972 with the goal of promoting positive social change through arts and theater in Brooklyn. Today, the theater still presents shows with the intent of entertaining and uplifting the African/Caribbean American community. Actors that have performed at BHT include Samuel L. Jackson, Debbie Allen, Bill Cobbs, Elaine Graham, Phyllis Yvonne Stickney, Ebony JoAnn, and Carol Woods, just to name a few.

There are many advantages of experiencing arts and theater in Brooklyn as opposed to Manhattan. Once you cross the river, there are many more opportunities to see cutting edge, original material, often at lower prices. The Brooklyn arts and theater scene is thriving and will continue to be a cultural hub deserving of recognition.

Brooklyn Attractions

Brooklyn is no longer simply a borough of New York City; it’s a brand. Sure, Brooklyn’s ascent has been a decade in the making, but it’s never been easier for tourists to base themselves in the beloved borough as it is now with a host of uber-trendy new hotels and top of the line restaurants that make Manhattan almost an afterthought. Tack on Jay-Z’s flashy new Barclays Center (home to the Brooklyn Nets, the borough’s first major league sports team since the Dodgers left in 1957) and you’ve got what local magazines are calling the New Brooklyn. If you want to scope out America’s next big rappers, writers, rock stars, artists and chefs, this is the spot.

There is no shortage of attractions in Brooklyn. Regardless of whether you’re looking for a peaceful walk in the park, an exciting amusement park, a museum, or just some dessert, you’ll never be too far from something interesting and fun. Here’s just a small sample of the some of the most popular Brooklyn attractions:

Brooklyn Bridge Park

Perhaps the most famous of all Brooklyn attractions is the Brooklyn Bridge. Completed in 1883, the bridge spans the East River and connects Brooklyn to Manhattan. It is one of the oldest suspension bridges in the country, and is commonly considered to be one of the most photographed landmarks in the United States. The Brooklyn bridge has a dedicated pedestrian walkway that allows one to admire the Manhattan skyline while peacefully strolling above the vehicle traffic. The bridge can be accessed on the Brooklyn side via an underpass on Washington street in the Dumbo neighborhood. Keep in mind that, for both tourists and New York City natives, this is one of the most visited attractions in Brooklyn. While on the pedestrian path, you’ll want to watch out for cyclists and avoid rush periods.

Brooklyn Bridge Park is an 85-acre post-industrial waterfront site stretching 1.3 miles along Brooklyn’s East River edge. The site spans from the Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges in the north to Pier 6 and Atlantic Avenue in the south. The site is long and narrow with a crenulated edge formed by the piers.

The park, designed by Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, includes Piers 1-6, Empire Fulton Ferry and Main Street. In addition, two historic properties, the Civil war-era Empire Stores and the Tobacco warehouse, will be integrated into the park.

The park provides green space for active and passive uses including playing fields, sport courts, playgrounds, lawns, and running and bicycle paths. A calm water area is available for kayaking and canoeing.

Green-Wood Cemetery

A cemetery might not be on the top of your list when considering different attractions in Brooklyn, but the Green-Wood cemetery is a must-see for anyone who loves architecture, history, bird watching, or beautiful landscapes. Green-Wood was founded as a small rural cemetery in 1838 and, in only 20 years, was seeing just as many visitors per year as Niagara Falls. This was due in part to the incredibly beautiful statues and mausoleums, as well as the charming ponds, paths, hills, and valleys contained in its 478 acres. Several historic figures such as baseball greats, Civil War generals, artists, politicians, and inventors are buried here. Also, the 1776 Battle of Long Island was fought on its grounds. This Brooklyn attraction was the inspiration for many of the public parks in New York City, including Central Park and Prospect Park.

Brooklyn Heights Promenade

The Brooklyn Heights Promenade is perhaps the most fitting place to begin your tour of Brooklyn attractions. The Promenade is a scenic stretch along the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway that provides some of the most picturesque views of New York City’s famous landmarks. Featured in movies such as Moonstruck and Annie Hall, the Promenade provides spectacular views of places such as the Statue of Liberty, Staten Island, Ellis Island, Governor’s Island, Ellis Island, South Street Seaport, Fulton Fish Market, and the Brooklyn Bridge. There are plenty of benches where a visitor can sit and take in the sites and sounds of New York in a peaceful setting on the East River. It has gained a reputation for being one of the most Brooklyn attractions, and many marriage proposals and first dates occur there.

Prospect Park

Prospect Park could be considered comparable to Manhattan’s Central Park. Designed by the same architects, Calvert Vaux and Frederick Law Olmsted, Prospect Park contains 585 acres of breathtaking scenery and attractions all its own. It contains the majority of the remaining indigenous forest of Brooklyn, as well as a band shell, an ice rink, a carousel, and several recreational and athletic facilities, all of which host events throughout the year. Other attractions in the park include the Litchfield Villa, the Prospect Park Zoo, the Long Meadow, the Boathouse, and the Audobon Center. Prospect Park is also famous for its man-made watercourse, featuring Brooklyn’s only lake. Self-guided tours are available, as well as bird walks, twilight tours, and electric boat tours.

Jacques Torres Chocolate

Hiding among the many Brooklyn attractions found in the Dumbo neighborhood, Jacques Torres Chocolate offers some of the most decadent and unique chocolate concoctions in the city. Jacques Torres, nicknamed “Mr. Chocolate,” is a world-famous pastry chef that has won several culinary awards, authored Dessert Circus books, hosted his own Food Network program, and even contributed to a $30,000-per-couple fundraiser for Barack Obama. His chocolate shop sells extremely well-reviewed products such as bark, hot chocolate, and chocolate chip cookies, as well as less traditional items such as chocolate covered Cheerios.

Coney Island

Coney Island is one of the most unique historic landscapes in any major American city. Depending on your perspective, this Brooklyn attraction can be experienced in several different ways. Coney Island was the most popular amusement park in the country, but it saw its peak before WWII. It was then largely neglected for decades and fell into disrepair. Evidence of this now-defunct amusement park can still be witnessed, and in this sense, a visitor can tour Coney Island to experience a gritty, nostalgic portrait of American decay. On the other hand, there have been major pushes since 2010 to restore Coney Island, including the opening of Luna Park. Luna hosts many amusement park rides and games, including the famous Cyclone roller coaster, built in 1927 and still operational today. An entirely different way to experience Coney Island involves lounging on the three miles of sandy beach, walking the famous boardwalk, or playing some volleyball or basketball on the many available courts.

RIDES AND ATTRACTIONS

Many of the Coney Island rides and attractions don’t have websites or other contact information. But if you have questions, you can call or check out the website from one of the following:

Fireworks on the Beach

Fireworks shoot off at 9:30pm every Friday night during the season. Fireworks generally start the last weekend in June and conclude the Friday before Labor Day.

Food

Coney Island is the birthplace of the hot-dog, and there is no shortage of places to eat here. Some of our favorites are:

New York Aquarium

New York City has only one Aquarium, and it’s located on Brooklyn’s Coney Island. Originally opened in 1896 in Battery Park, The New York Aquarium is the longest-running continually operated aquarium in the country. Since moving to the Coney Island boardwalk in 1957, it’s come to host over 350 species of aquatic wildlife over 14 acres. These species include mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, and amphibians. Special exhibits include a floor-to-ceiling shark tank, an “Alien Stingers” exhibit that showcases the bizarrely beautiful world of jellyfish, an aquatheater that hosts impressive sea lion shows, and many more. You’ll also be able to experience shark, walrus, and penguin feedings. Unlike some aquariums, the New York Aquarium is open every day of the year, and the animals are always on exhibit.

New York Transit Museum

The New York Transit Museum began as a simple transit exhibit, opened on July 4, 1976 in the decommissioned Court Street subway station. It featured old subway cars and models, and the price of entrance was one subway token. The exhibit was scheduled to be closed after the U.S. bicentennial celebration was over, but it was so popular that it stayed open and eventually developed into a permanent, full museum in the Brooklyn Heights neighborhood. Vintage subway cars, some dating back as far as the 1920s, are consistently on display at this Brooklyn attraction. These cars are actually operable, and they occasionally carry passengers on nostalgia excursions. In addition to trains, the museum also hosts vintage motor trucks, buses, changing exhibits, and a large archive of photos, records, and artifacts.

Strategically positioned, the house was occupied by the British and turned into an artillery position to fire upon American soldiers. The house was held by an estimated 2,000 British and hired Hessian soldiers. Against this stronghold, some 400 Maryland soldiers led by General William Alexander threw themselves into several attacks, ultimately being defeated but allowing George Washington and his troops to escape, thereby saving the nascent American army.

The Toy Museum of NY

157 Montague Street
Brooklyn, NY 11201
Brooklyn Heights
(718)243-0820

First established in 1999 as The Doll and Toy Museum of NYC, the not-for-profit educational museum changed its name to The Toy Museum of NY in Spring 2009 in celebration of its 10th anniversary. The new name reflects the Museum’s coveted distinction, by the New York State Department of Education, as the holder of the only New York Charter for a toy museum.

The Museum’s educational philosophy uses toys as a teaching aide for school subjects such as history and social studies. The exhibitions are set up using the Museum’s innovation and ingenuity, and proven success displaying toys — along with informative signage — to educate children about historic events such as the Invention of the Airplane, Automobiles, Child’s Past and Immigration, just to name a few.

Since its founding, the Museum has curated many successful touring exhibitions that have been visited by thousands of children, parents and teachers. These exhibitions have been on display through partnerships with the New York Transit Museum, the South Street Seaport Museum as well as many other prominent museums throughout the USA and libraries in New York City.

And Still, She Grows Flower in Her Flesh: New work by Alexandria Smith & Katherine Toukhy

On View: 07/17 – 08/07
Opening Reception: Sun. 07/17 from 4:30 – 7PM

Like Nayyirah Waheed, whose poem “A Genocide for Flowers” inspired the title for this exhibition, Alexandria Smith’s and Katherine Toukhy’s respective work responds to notions of multiple and developing identities.

Seemingly light-hearted with its bold colors and cartoonish aesthetics, Alexandria Smith’s paintings rely on the repetitive but fragmented representation of ribbons, shoes, pigtails and dresses to convey an uneasy feeling of almost playful games, set in liminal spaces that allude to domestic and urban environments.

Katherine Toukhy’s wall works are densely layered, hand-drawn collages that compose small and large-scale figures. These characters are built with Islamic and camouflage patterns, orientalist imagery, and evocative landscapes, as if they were growing out of their layered histories and herstories.

LuLu’s 15th Anniversary Carnival @ LuLu’s Cuts & Toys

LuLu’s Cuts & Toys is reaching a big milestone this August: We’re celebrating 15 years in business! LuLu’s has provided Brooklyn families with a place to get a stylish haircut for their children and a great selection of toys since 2001, and was the first children’s salon in Brooklyn. Voted Best Kids Hair Salon in Time Out Kids!

To celebrate this special occasion, we’re throwing a carnival themed party on August 13th, 2016 from 5-8pm, right outside our store at 48 5th Ave, Brooklyn, NY. We are partnering with the 5th Ave Park Slope BID Summer Strolls to make this more than just a block party! We have several events planned, including a bounce house, face painting, carnival games, a carousel ride and much more.
